Why I Hate Wordpress(.com)

Several months ago I received an email from Microsoft regarding my Spaces profile.  Apparently they are shutting them down, and offered to move everything to a free Wordpress page.  I made the transfer, but stuck with Blogger as my main blog service in the mean time.  Sometime in November I received yet another email, reminding me that my Spaces account would be closed.  Even though I was perfectly happy with Blogger, I decided to make the switch anyways.  I was always a bit curious about Wordpress; thinking it was better than Blogger for some reason.  Ever since then I've regretted that decision.

I've moved from several blogging platforms over the years.  MySpace, Spaces, Blogger, one I can't remember, back to Blogger, and now here.  Of those services I've used, Blogger easily takes the cake.  I honestly can't believe how limited Wordpress is in comparison to Blogger.  Lets start with the templates: in Blogger, it's pretty damn configurable.  You can go in and edit the CSS to whatever the hell you want.  Wordpress?  You have to pay to do just that.  Sure there are a crapload of themes to choose from, but if I want to change the background image on any of them, I'll have to fork up $15.  A year.

How about videos?  In Blogger I can upload videos just fine(though I'm not sure of the limit).  With Wordpress?  $60 a year.  Another road block Wordpress throws at you is their handling of javascript, or lack thereof I should say.  I used a number of widgets while at Blogger, such as a live visitor count.  When attempting to use the same widget on this blog, it didn't work.  Thinking I missed a line of code I tried again, but it still wouldn't show up.  After a quick Google search I found out Wordpress.com users can't use javascript codes on their blog.  If that isn't enough, they won't even allow flash.

So, if you happen to be thinking about switching from Blogger to Wordpress, and you care about customization, just don't.  I shouldn't have left Blogger in the first place.  I'd go back to Blogger, but I'm tired of switching services.  I might later on.

  1. I'm with you on this :) We just moved our site to Wordpress and what a feckin mistake that was. Nothing works properly. It's so slow. It's screwed up half our posts from Blogger so they're not laid out correctly. All thumbprint photos have disappeared and, like you said, videos - we're not paying 60 bucks a year to be able to use videos.

We've been with WP a week and already looking at moving it somewhere else. It's an incomplete piece of software that shouldn't have ever been put up for millions of people to use the way it has been.
