I tried thinking of a witty title that would incorporate Tribes and college, but eventually said fuck it. It's Monday, meaning I had my late class, and I'm exhausted. The class itself isn't all that difficult(Composition 1). But I guess starting at 6pm and ending at 9:40pm messes with my inner clock, as I'm always tired after class. Before class started I had a meeting with my adviser to set up summer and fall classes. I went in thinking things would go smoothly. How naive...
Not long into the registration process I'm told that a lot of my classes aren't available on the campus I'm at, and would have to travel to another campus to attend them. The closest one is an hour and a half away, and it sounded like I'd be driving there every other day. While I could do this, I certainly didn't want to for obvious reasons(gas, time. Mostly gas). The only other options I had were to take them online, or choose a different major. To be honest, I'm not absolutely in love with web development. I would much rather go into a web design field, which I've mentioned in a previous post. In short, I'd like to paint the car, but they're teaching me to become a mechanic. Sure it's useful information to have, and the two definitely relate, but I'm not digging the server and MySQL classes I'll have to take.
Unfortunately nothing else interests me. The only other thing I could possibly think of was journalism; something I seriously thought about getting into 5 or so years ago. But they don't offer that, so I'm stuck with taking online classes for web development. I've heard mixed things about online classes, so we'll see how it goes. It sucks to have my schedule fucked with like that, especially since I was told I'd be able to take all the required classes at this campus. Anyways, we got things sorted out for the most part and I'll be taking 3 classes this summer, and a few in the fall...I think. I'll be getting my complete schedule sometime next week so I'll know for sure then. Now, onto the real important stuff: Tribes!
Hi-Rez Studios have released the first in-game screens of Tribes: Ascend and, well, my feelings are mixed. Thankfully they're generally positive, but a few things have me weary. But first lets take a look at the damn pictures already:
First thing that popped out at me was the size of the gun, which is a disclauncher if you can believe it. To me, the Tribes disclauncher has always had a flat, sleek look to it. This does not have a sleek look to it. Honestly, it reminded me of a mix between CoD and Halo. It looks too much like the Tribes: Vengeance disclauncher, which is odd since they've claimed to be basing the game off of Tribes 2, which has a much flatter disclauncher. Really hope they listen to the majority of people and chip away at the current model.
Another thing that I noticed was the jet-trails, mainly their length. I was immediately reminded of the old Fallen Empire: Legions jet-trails. This isn't necessarly a good nor bad things; merely something I noticed. I also spotted the Drydock structures from the concept art they released a while ago. You can spot a 'ship' from the concept art in the second T:A screenshot, along with similar base structures in both screenshots. And I think you can see a red/pink meteorite at the top left of the first screenshot.
As for the not-so-noticeable things, I can't tell for sure if those are medium or heavy Diamond Sword models in the first screenshot. I'm leaning towards Heavy, but they could easily be Medium seeing how beefy their concepts are. I'm also not totally sure of that ammo counter. 19 discs seems like a lot for a disclauncher. The standard amount of discs from Tribes 1 is 15 I believe, maybe even 10. The increase of discs leads me to believe the firing rate might've been increased and damage decreased from previous games, but I could easily be wrong about that. You can also sort-of see that the terrain looks much more 'skiable' than the Drydock concept art they released before. One last thing I'd like to point out in screenshot #2 is the Light Diamond Sword model. Besides the sword on his back, you can also see a white line by his head. Sniper trail? Who knows. Just another small thing I noticed.

These screens make me weep at the thought of our former potential.
ReplyDeletePurdy pictures, but gameplay could be shit. Guess we'll just have to wait. Though I must admit I'm surprised they're this far into development..
